Accessibility

The following is a list of some of the actions which have been taken to improve the accessibility of our site.

• Changing your text size
• Magnifying your screen
• Enlarging your mouse pointer
• Screen readers

• All text has a relative font size which means you can resize the text at any time if you want to.
• We have used appropriate structural mark-up to maximise browser support
• Cascading Style Sheets have been used to control the presentation of pages
• Alt tags have been used to provide a description of imagery
• We have chosen to not use access keys to avoid their inherent problems. For further explaination read this article on access keys.
• Where useful, links have title tags to further explain their use
• We have used a simple and consistent site navigation
• Wherever possible, we use live text instead of graphics to reduce the download time of pages and increase your control
• No information is exclusively conveyed using colour

Changing your text size

There are different ways of changing the size of the text displayed depending on which web browser you are using.
Click on your browser in this list to go to the relevant instructions:

• Internet Explorer (Windows)
• Mozilla/Netscape 6+ (Windows and Macintosh)
• Firefox 1.0 (Windows and Macintosh)
• Opera (Windows and Macintosh)
• Safari (Macintosh)
• Chrome (Windows and Macintosh)

Please note: the menu shortcut keys listed here only work in Windows

Macintosh users can use Command + (plus) to increase the text size in all browsers. Command - (minus) will reduce the text size

Internet Explorer (Windows)

1. Select the View option from the main menu at the top of the browser window. Use the mouse or press the ALT + v keys.
   A drop down menu will appear.
2. Select the Text Size option from the drop down menu. Use the mouse or press the x key.
   A sub menu option window will appear containing the following five choices: Largest, Larger, Medium, Smaller and Smallest.
   Medium is the default value.
3. Select from among the five options by using the mouse to highlight or by pressing the appropriate keyboard letter, i.e. g for Largest, l for Larger, m for Medium, s for Smaller or a for Smallest.
   The size of the text displayed in the browser window will change in accordance with your choice.

1. Select the View option from the main menu at the top of the browser window. Use the mouse or Windows users can press the ALT + v keys.
   A drop down menu will appear.
2. Select the Text Zoom option from the drop down menu. Use the mouse or press the z key.
   A sub menu window will appear containing three sets of options for changing displayed text size:
   1. Increase or decrease the text size by small amounts.
      Select either the Smaller or the Larger option. Use the mouse to select Smaller or Larger; alternatively, press the appropriate shortcut: CTRL - (minus) for Smaller, CTRL + (plus) for Larger.
      The size of text displayed in the browser window will increase or decrease by small amounts in accordance with your choice.
   2. Change the text size to one of 7 pre-defined percentages of the default: 50, 75, 90, 100, 120, 150 and 200 percent.
      Select from among the 7 pre-defined percentages. Use the mouse to highlight your choice or the appropriate keyboard short cut, i.e. 5 for 50%, 7 for 75%, 9 for 90%, z for 100% (the default), 1 for 120%, 5 for 150% or 2 for 200%.
      The size of the text displayed in the browser window will change in accordance with your choice.
   3. Change the text size to an arbitrary percentage of the default, e.g. 300%, 37.5%.
      Select the Other Options menu item. Use the mouse to highlight your choice or press the o shortcut key.
      A pop up input window titled Text Zoom will appear.
      Type in the percentage amount by which you wish to change the default text size. Click on OK or press the ENTER key.
      The size of the text displayed in the browser window will change in accordance with the value you enter in the input field.
   
   These three options may be used separately or in combination.

Firefox 1.0 (Windows and Macintosh)

1. From the Firefox Menu Bar select View>Text Size>Increase
2. This will cause the text to display on the web page one size larger. However this is a temporary change.

Or use the keyboard:

1. Press Ctrl & +/-, or Ctrl & scroll down/up to increase/decrease the text size.

To make a permanent font size change:

1. From the Firefox Menu Bar,
   1. Windows: select Tools>Options.
      Select 'General'
   2. Macintosh: select Preferences.
2. Click on 'Fonts & Colors'.
3. Set the font sizes. Minimum font size.can also be set.

Opera (Windows and Macintosh)

1. Select the View option from the main menu at the top of the browser window. Use the mouse to make a selection or press the ALT + v shortcut keys.
   A drop down menu will appear.
2. Select the Zoom option from the drop down menu. Use the mouse or press the z key.
   A sub menu will appear containing the following options: 50, 80, 90, 100 (the default), 120, 150, 200 percent.
   In addition, there are four more options that make percentage increments or decrements to text size: -100, +100, -10 and +10 percent.
   Select from among the options by using the mouse to highlight your choice.
   The size of the text displayed in the browser window will change in accordance with your choice.

• Alternately, use the + (plus) and - (minus) keys on your keyboards number pad, or the Zoom selector in the toolbar.

Safari (Macintosh)

1. Select the View option from the main menu at the top of the browser window. Use the mouse to make a selection.
   A drop down menu will appear.
2. Select the Make Text bigger option from the drop down menu.
   The size of the text displayed in the browser window will become bigger.
3. Select the Make Text smaller option from the drop down menu.
   The size of the text displayed in the browser window will become smaller.

Chrome (Windows and Macintosh)

1. Select the Settings option from the main menu at the top of the browser window. Use the mouse to make the selection.
2. Select 'Show advanced settings...' and from the extended list, under web content, use the dropdown list to change the fontsize.

Magnifying your screen

Windows (PC)

1. Open the Start menu by clicking on the Start button or by pressing the Windows logo key (located between the Ctrl and Alt keys on most keyboards ) alternatively press Ctrl + Esc.
2. Click on Programs or alternatively press P on the keyboard until Programs is highlighted and then Enter
3. Click on Accessories or press A on the keyboard until Accessories is highlighted and then press Enter
4. Click on Accessibility or if you are using the keyboard, it will already be highlighted so just press Enter
5. Click on Magnifier or press M and when Magnifier is highlighted, press Enter on the keyboard
6. The magnifier is now turned on and the settings box appears
7. You can click in the magnification level box to change the level of magnification (highlighted below ) or use the up and down arrow keys
8. You can minimise the magnifier settings box by clicking the minimise button or by pressing Alt + Space and then press N

OSX (Mac)

1. Make sure you are in Finder - press Apple + Tab if necessary to cycle through open applications until you return to Finder.
2. Click on the Apple menu or press Ctrl + F2.
3. Click on System Preferences or press the down arrow key to highlight it and then press Enter.
4. Click on the Universal Access icon or press Tab repeatedly (you might need to press Ctrl + F7 first) to cycle through the icons until the Universal Access icon is highlighted with a blue border and then press the Spacebar.
5. Click on the Seeing tab or press Ctrl + F7 (once or twice) to highlight one of the four tabs for example Keyboard and then press the left or right arrow key to select the Seeing tab (highlighted in blue).
6. Click on the Turn on Zoom button or press Tab to highlight the Turn on Zoom button and press the Spacebar.
7. To zoom in press Alt + Apple + + (plus), this zooms to your maximum level of magnification set in Zoom Options... . The preview rectangle (black bordered box) shows the area of the screen that you will see at maximum zoom. To step back or zoom out press Alt + Apple + - (minus). Move your mouse around the screen to view the magnified page. To change the Maximum and Minimum Zoom settings click on Zoom Options or press Tab until Zoom Options is highlighted and then press the Spacebar.
8. Click on the Maximum Zoom gauge bar to increase or decrease the Magnification level or press Tab (you might need to press Ctrl + F7 first) to highlight the slider on the gauge bar and use the left and right arrow keys to increase or decrease the maximum magnification level.
9. Click on the Minimum Zoom gauge bar to increase or decrease the Magnification level or press Tab (you might need to press Ctrl + F7 first) to highlight the slider on the gauge bar and use the left and right arrow keys to increase or decrease the minimum magnification level.
10. When you have finished click on the Done button or press Tab until it is selected and then press Enter . Finally click the Close (red) button at the top of the Universal Access window or press Apple + W to close the window and return to the Finder desktop.
11. To turn magnification on or off at any time press Alt + Apple + * (asterisk).

Enlarging your mouse pointer

Windows XP

1. Open the Start menu by clicking on the Start button or by pressing the Windows logo key (located between the Ctrl and Alt keys) - or Ctrl + Esc
2. Click on Control Panel or press the letter C on the keyboard.
3. Double click on Mouse or press the M key repeatedly until Mouse is highlighted and then press Enter.
4. The mouse properties page should be displayed
   
5. Click on the Pointer tab or press Control + Tab until the Pointer tab is at the front.
6. Underneath Scheme is a drop down box which contains predefined sets of mouse pointers you can use. Click on this box, or press Tab until the scheme drop down box is highlighted, and the list appears.
7. Use the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard to move through the list. As you do so, you will see the pictures changing to reflect the scheme that is highlighted at the time. Some of these sets are labelled as Large, Extra Large or Inverted schemes - these are the ones you should try first.
8. To choose a scheme either click on it or if it is already highlighted press the Enter key on the keyboard.
9. Click OK or press Enter to exit the mouse properties.

Mac

1. Make sure you are in Finder - press Apple + Tab if necessary to cycle through open applications until you return to Finder.
2. Click on the Apple menu or press Ctrl + F2.
3. Click on System Preferences or press the down arrow key to highlight it and then press Enter.
4. Click on the Universal Access icon or press Tab repeatedly (you might need to press Ctrl + F7 first) to cycle through the icons until the Universial Access icon is highlighted with a blue border and then press the Spacebar .
5. Click on the Mouse tab or press Ctrl + F7 (once or twice) to highlight one of the four tabs for example Keyboard and then press the left or right arrow key to select the Mouse tab (highlighted in blue).
6. Click on the Cursor Size: gauge bar to change the pointer size, or press Tab to reach the gauge bar and use the left and right arrow keys to select your pointer size.
7. When you are happy with your pointer click the Close (red) button at the top of the Universal Access window or press Apple + W to close the window and return to the Finder desktop.

Screen readers

• Browsealoud reads web pages aloud for people who find it difficult to read online.
• JAWS, a screen reader for Windows. A time-limited, downloadable demo is available.
• Lynx, a free text-only web browser for blind users with refreshable Braille displays.
• Links, a free text-only web browser for visual users with low bandwidth.
• Opera, a visual browser with many accessibility-related features, including text zooming, user stylesheets, image toggle. A free downloadable version is available. Compatible with Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and several other operating systems.
